Rotterdam has so many great artists, designers and creative entrepreneurs. Where do they work? For five years, the @grootrotterdamsatelierweekend has provided an inside peek at all of these destinations. Looking back on a weekend where over 700 artists welcomed visitors to nearly 100 places, I wish there were more opportunities to visit these creative hotspots! Into edition 2024 we go! 🥳

Beautiful Blue city Chefchaouen💙 👀🐐⛰️

Dating back to the 15th century, Jewish refugees painted the houses blue to mirror the sky and remind them of God. After Marrakesh, this city should be on your bucket list when visiting Morocco

Every two years, the entire city needs to be painted a fresh colour of blue. The local government provides paint to and you can buy the blue pigments on the streets 🎨 Most art and clothes you can buy also has this blue color

This is the only walled inner city, a medina, in Morocco where you can’t get lost. Just look up and spot the twin 1,700-meter-high peaks that give Chefchaouen its name. The shape of the peaks refer to Chaoua 🐐 which means ‘horns of a goat,’ and Chef 👀 means ‘looks at.’

The Worlds Most Iconic Garden.. with the trademark color Majorelle Blue 💙😍💙

Thanks to the French designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé the @jardinmajorellemarrakech has been restored in its full glory since the 80s

But was the artist Jacques Majorelle who acquired this four-acre plot of land in Marrakech in 20s and commissioned the French architect Paul Sinoir to design a painting studio, which today is the museum.

The intense cobalt blue 🟦accents the art deco buildings, Moorish details, fountains, and edges of the garden, creating a striking contrast against the desert landscape of Morocco. In fact, the electric blue hue became a trademark color known as Majorelle Blue💙

The property became so expensive to maintain that he was forced to open it to the public in 1947 until his death in Paris in 1962. The garden gradually fell into a state of disrepair and was slated for development.

Fast forward to now, the garden is open and also houses the Musee Yves Saint Laurent @myslmarrakech paying tribute to the designer’s legacy and connection to Marrakech and a Berber museum

When you visit the garden in the afternoon, when it’s most warm, as we did, you can enjoy the quieter atmosphere and take great pictures 🪴🌴

One hour by boat north of Venezia, you will find Murano and Torcello. While Torcello is the oldest island, starting in the 7th, Murano is the most colourful town in Italy

According to legend, Burano wives painted their houses brilliant colours so their husbands could recognise the island from afar while at sea

The colours in these residences have developed throughout time, becoming much more vibrant than they were a century or two ago. This colourful practice, thought to have originated in the 16th century, is today strictly regulated.

To maintain the island’s particular attractiveness and continuity with its historic palette, homeowners must obtain government approval before repainting, according to the official website. What those rules are, remain a mystery.

If you step aside the main canal, you can still walk through quiet and colourful alleys😀

Love is God by @robertindiana marked the start of the famous LOVE series

Before Indiana became synonymous with the word, the second and most-public-to-date appearance of the word LOVE ❤️ in his oeuvre occurred in the diamond-shaped, 1964 painting Love Is God💎

Indiana was commissioned to create this piece by the collector Larry Aldrich for an exhibition of his private collection he was planning. Inspired by Christianity while being gay in the 60s, he became fascinated by this word and the first iteration of “LOVE” appeared in a series of paintings also in 1964, evolving into the famous stacked-letter design with the tilted “🅾️”

This bold, graphic style captured the spirit of the 1960s—a time marked by a quest for peace and love amid social upheaval. The work you see here is via @mcnayart

📍Location of the exhibition: go to Piazza San Marco 105 and search for Procuratie Vecchie Venice. It’s on the second floor within a signs on the ground floor. More than 40 works track six decades of his artistic activity, starting from significant youth works, some of which are rarely exposed

My first meeting with Sigrid, we agreed on the power of art. In front of the Torentje, our prime minister’s office. Looking at it from within her own pink Torentje.

I’ve never seen anything by Sigrid that appears to be genuinely three-dimensional until now. See how her identifiable graphics accentuate the curving forms?😍

Her work is part of the exhibition: #blowupartthehague which opens tomorrow. Including works by Studio Job, Marcel Wanders and Mieke Meijer. Until June 2. Free entry

Since 1982, the Torentje, often known as the Little Tower, in the Binnenhof in The Hague has served as the de facto office of the Dutch Prime Minister.🤓

This small octagonal building at the Hofvijver dates from around 1354. It was connected by a drawbridge (floating bridge) with the count’s garden. Like Sigrid’s is now! At the site of this garden, later east of the tower the Mauritshuis was built around 1640. It became the residence for John Maurice, Prince of Nassau-Siegen. Today the Mauritshuis is a museum. So, the tower has a history with art!

Daniel Buren colours the Santiago Calatrava-designed Liège-Guillemins station 💛❤️ *until 15 June 2024*

🌈🚆The work, entitled Comme tombées du ciel, les couleurs in situ et en mouvement: As if falling from the sky.

It harmonizes with the rhythmic architecture by #calatravaarchitecture and floods the railway station with a bold interplay of colorful light. Luik is just 30min away from Maastricht and 60 Min from Brussels via @nmbs.be

The #lightartwork by #danielburen has been deployed across the vast arrays of glass panels which enclose the station’s canopy, and will be constantly transform response to the shifting light throughout the day and changing seasons

Ten thousand square-meters of the station’s roof is wrapped with transparent and adhesive filters in seven colors. Five colors — pink, green, blue, white and orange — project a checkerboard pattern ♟️🌅from the glass panels while two others — yellow and red– cloak the side awnings in a form that is ‘reminiscent of the striped panels,’ a recurring feature of the artist’s work since 1960s❤️💛

Daniel Buren is a French Conceptual artist best known for his distinctive #sitespecificart installations of alternating stripe patterns. His concept of a “degree zero of painting,” which he developed in the early 1960s, is the artist’s hallmark approach to the conditions of making a work of art

The person who made is possible is the Liège entrepreneur Stéphan Uhoda who was awarded two prizes in March 2024. For its project to install a work by Daniel Buren at the Liège-Guillemins station, the #uhodagroup won both the #caïus prize for Corporate Sponsor of the Year, as well as the Public Prize

Japanese artist Mio Fujimaki @fjmkmo shows her work ‘Bruise’ in Maastricht. Part of the exhibition “In Vitro” at @bureau_europa which is running till 16th June 2024

Manufacturers of glass products often apply deliberate ‘stress’ to make the glass tempered, stronger. Once the glass breaks, it shatters into countless pieces as small as possible, which are less dangerous than large, sharp shards of glass. So the glass has stress to protect people.
With her installation you can look through the lenses at the ‘stress’ in the glass
